Sights in the old town

Centrally located, the town hall with its impressive baroque façade, massive tower and beautiful inner courtyard stands in the middle of Rheinfelden's old town.

The Town Hall is located in Rheinfelden Town Hall and is decorated with images of Habsburg rulers and coats of arms. Anyone wishing to marry in Rheinfelden can celebrate their civil wedding here.

The carillon in the Rumpel is a reminder of the cunning tailor who saved Rheinfelden from the Swedes.

The noble houses were built in the 16th century by the Rheinfelden nobility at the upper end of the old town. Today there is a school, kindergarten and the clinic Schützen in it.

Archduke Albrecht VI proudly towers over the fountain and overlooks the secluded Albrechtsplatz. However, the popular landmark stood in a different place for a long time before that.

The old town of Rheinfelden offers an idyllic ambience. The historic buildings and names of the alleys tell the story of a lively town in the Middle Ages.

The building on Obertorplatz is one of the most beautiful sights in Rheinfelden. It was a tavern, a trade shop and a hotel with a brine bath.

Unfortunately, the Engel is no longer an inn today, but its history goes back a long way: it was the first hotel with a brine bath for the poor.

The Haus zur Sonne in Rheinfelden's Marktgasse was first mentioned in documents at the time of Maria Theresia. Today it houses the Fricktal Museum.

The Castle Stein used to stand on the Inseli. That is why it is also called Burgstell. It is the residence of Rudolf von Rheinfelden. Today it is a beautiful park with a view of the Rhine and the old town.

The Johanniter Chapel is a former Roman Catholic chapel. It is located on Johannitergasse in the immediate vicinity of the Johanniterkommende.

The Johanniterkommende was a religious house of the Knights of St. John or Maltese. Berchtold von Zähringer founded the knightly order in the Middle Ages.

In Habsburg times, the Kommandantenhaus was the residence of the Austrian commanders in Rheinfelden.

The St. Martin's Church is a Christian Catholic church in Rheinfelden. It is over 1000 years old and has different architectural styles.

The eastern tower of the old town is home to the storks. The tower room can be rented and offers a view of the roofs of the old town.

The Obertorturm is considered the most important tower of the medieval city fortifications. Strangely enough, its tower clock does not strike on the hour.

The Messerturm stands impressively at the north-eastern end of the old town on the Rhine, and many stories surround it and how it got its name.
