Rheinfelden Medieval and Fantasy Festival

The fifth Medieval and Fantasy Festival will take place on the weekend of June 27–28, 2026. Inspired by the city’s current motto, “Rhyfälde – where the sun is at home,” we hope for a festival filled with bright sunshine and a great atmosphere.

In the historic old town, there will be plenty to see, taste, and experience this weekend, bringing together young and old through the worlds of the Middle Ages and fantasy.

Medieval festivals and markets have enjoyed great popularity for years and are seeing steadily growing visitor numbers. As the oldest city in the canton of Aargau, Rheinfelden, with its picturesque old town, offers the ideal setting for a festival of this kind. The Medieval and Fantasy Festival takes place every two years, alternating with the Youth Festival, in the old town of Rheinfelden.

The Middle Ages and fantasy are coming to Rheinfelden.

It’s not just fans of the Middle Ages and fantasy—all other guests will also find something to enjoy in the diverse program: from staged battles and camp life, games, and juggling acts, to storytime and a fire show, there’s plenty on offer for young and old alike.

Temperatures of up to 38°C are expected. Please remember to drink plenty of water, wear a hat or other head covering, and cool down regularly in the shade.

For refreshment, a misting tent is available at the Rheinparking. In addition, drinking water fountains can be found at Hauptwachplatz, Zähringerplatz, Rathaus, Rumpel, Fröschweid (near the old Rhine bridge) and Albrechtsplatz.

Market stalls featuring medieval crafts.

Market vendors offer their wares for sale on the main square: cloth, knives, leather, furs, swords, and jewelry. You can also watch a dyer and a blacksmith at work.

Fantasy meets the Middle Ages.

The Middle Ages often serve as a backdrop for fantasy worlds. This weekend, Rheinfelden itself will be transformed into just such a setting:

  • Walking Acts
  • Orc camp on the sports field
  • Guided role-playing games in the Capuchin Church, including Dungeons & Dragons
  • Mercenary camp with a show kitchen and exhibition on the sports field

Fricktal Museum & Ringmauerscheune.

Climb the medieval city wall in the Ringmauerscheune and experience the city from the perspective of the historic fortifications. Learn about the conquest of Aargau by the Swiss Confederates in 1415. For kids: Mouse Alert! In a scavenger hunt, the goal is to find the hidden members of the Pieps mouse family in the Ringmauerscheune. Anyone who finds them all will receive a small prize. Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Haus Fricktaler Museum (Marktgasse 12) is open on both days from 2–5 p.m. as usual. Standard admission prices apply. Admission to the Ringmauerscheune is free.

Getting There.

We recommend traveling by public transportation. Rheinfelden is accessible via the InterRegio 36 from Zurich Main Station in just under an hour and from Basel in only 12 minutes. Additionally, S-Bahn trains run all the way to Laufenburg.

On Saturday, the Basel Passenger Shipping boat runs from Basel to Rheinfelden and back. The lock cruise is a particularly memorable way to travel to the Medieval Festival. Tickets are available online or at the tourist office.

Parking is available at Salmen Parking, Rheinparking, and the Schützen and Storchennest parking lots.
