Rheinfelder Fasnacht
For 4 days a year, Mrs. Fasnacht takes over the sceptre in Rheinfelden. She is diligently supported by the Fasnachtsgesellschaft Rheinfelden (FGR) and its members. From several parades, numerous Guggen concerts and Schnitzelbänke to the big children's carnival, there is something for everyone. The colorful and atmospheric festivities are a celebration for young and old.
A long-standing tradition.
The Rheinfelden carnival is an integral part of Rheinfelden culture. In 2023, the Rheinfelden Carnival Society (FGR) celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Even in the Middle Ages, the common people celebrated carnival festivals where they played a few tricks on the authorities in disguise. Fasnacht takes its name from the term "Fastnacht", the night or days before the start of the 40-day period of fasting until Easter. Before this period of abstinence, the aim was to celebrate once again and at the same time drive away the winter.
Frau Fasnacht.
According to Rheinfeld tradition, Frau Fasnacht is hung from the Obertorturm tower at the opening of the carnival. From then on, she rules the town until the end of the carnival. She is then brought from Obertorplatz to the Schifflände in a festive ceremony. On the way, the government sceptre is handed back to the city council in front of the town hall.
The carnival revellers traditionally wear white scarves, which symbolize their mourning at the end of the carnival and the farewell to Mrs. Fasnacht - hence the name "Usbrüelete". Accompanied by music, Mrs. Fasnacht is placed on a raft at the Schifflände, set alight and handed over to the Rhine.
Motto & carnival badge.
Every year, the Rheinfelder Fasnacht takes place under a different motto. The matching Rheinfeld carnival badge is a must. The motif is determined in a competition in which all interested parties can submit a proposal. Proposals can be submitted to the town office until August 1.
The Rheinfeld badge can be purchased from the town office.
