Rheinfeld town hall
Centrally located, the town hall with its impressive baroque façade, massive tower and beautiful inner courtyard stands in the middle of Rheinfelden's old town.
An Austrian coat of arms on a Swiss town hall?
After the town hall burned down in 1531, it was rebuilt. The tower with its battlements dates back to the Zähringer period. The baroque façade from the 18th century shows the coats of arms of Austria, the County of Hauenstein, Laufenburg, Säckingen, Rheinfelden and the Truchsessen family.
Rheinfelden belonged to the Habsburgs and thus to Austria for almost 1000 years. Today, the entire town administration is housed in the historic building.

Rudolf: The King of Rheinfelden.
As you enter through the gate on the left, there is a cast of the tombstone of Rudolf of Rheinfelden († 1080). The former court and market arbors are also here.

Art in the town hall courtyard.
During the major renovation at the beginning of the 20th century, Paul Altherr painted "Winkelried's Heroic Death in the Battle of Sempach" and "Knight George's Dragon Fight". In this battle, the Austrians and thus also the people of Rheinfeld suffered a defeat against the Confederates. The Rheinfeld flag - still without stars - flies next to Duke Leopold in the battle painting. The picture was painted in 1911 and must be interpreted as a clear commitment to Switzerland.

The statue of "Prudence", the youthful centaur on the fountain and the gatekeepers were chiseled by Karl Killer, along with the doorposts carved by Otto Frey-Thilo in 1946. Johann Amman created the Gothic staircase and the two rich Renaissance portals as the entrance to the council chamber in 1612/13.

Get married in the town hall.
Would you like to celebrate your wedding in the town hall? The Rheinfelden civil registry office is located in the town hall and also holds weddings in the beautiful town hall hall. The inner courtyard with its staircase is also a popular photo location.

The oldest Zähringer town in Switzerland.
The coat of arms table in the inner courtyard is a gift from the Zähringer towns to mark the 850th anniversary of the town of Rheinfelden in 1980. In the middle is the Zähringer eagle, on the edge the coats of arms of the 11 Zähringer towns: Bern, Burgdorf, Murten, Fribourg, Thun, as well as the German towns of Bräunlingen, Freiburg im Breisgau, Villingen-Schwennigen, Neuenburg am Rhein and St. Peter im Schwarzwald. Weilheim an der Teck was only later included in the circle of Zähringer towns and is therefore not represented on the coat of arms table.
