Via Rhenana stages 9 & 10
The ViaRhenana opens up the historic waterway of the High Rhine. Rheinfelden is the second-last stop along the diverse river landscape.
Hike along Switzerland's most important waterway.
For centuries, the route via Untersee and Hochrhein was the most important waterway in Switzerland. Today, the ViaRhenana follows it from Kreuzlingen via Schaffhausen to Basel through a wide variety of landscapes shaped by water.
The Via Rhenana route covers 190 km and 10 stages along the course of the Rhine.
Stage 9:
Bad Säckingen - Rheinfelden.
The hiking trail leads almost continuously through the riverside forests of the Rhine. Along the way are the ruins of several Roman watchtowers and the "Bürkli" earthworks near Riburg.

Stage 10:
Rheinfelden - Basel.
The route follows the high bank of the Rhine, which is already heavily influenced by the industrial and transportation facilities in the Basel catchment area. The ruins of the Roman town of Augusta Raurica are well worth a stop. Later, the Rhine ports, river power stations and the city skyline of Basel are impressive.
