Enjoy the breeze, marvel at the passing scenery and let your mind wander - this is possible on the big lock trip from Basel to Rheinfelden. A walk through the historic old town of Rheinfelden rounds off the excursion. A great experience for the whole family.

Lock cruise from Basel to Rheinfelden.

The approximately two-and-a-half-hour cruise on the Rhine starts in the middle of the city of Basel. From the Rhystärn, the new flagship of the Basel passenger boat service, you can enjoy the view of small villages and towns and indulge in regional dishes in the restaurant. The highlight of the cruise is passing through the two locks at Birsfelden and Augst. The boat arrives at the landing stage in Rheinfelden at 1.30 pm. From there, it is only a few steps to the historic old town.

Glockenspiel in the Rumpel.

The old town with its narrow and winding houses tells the story of a lively town in the Middle Ages. The "Glockenspiel im Rumpel" is located in the middle of the alleyways. Four times a day (9 a.m., 12 noon, 3 p.m., 5 p.m.) the Geiss runs over the small town wall next to the house with musical accompaniment. It recalls the legend of the cunning tailor who saved Rheinfelden from the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. He sewed himself into the skin of the last slaughtered billy goat and walked around the town wall, bleating. The sight of the supposedly well-fattened animal gave the already siege-weary Swedes the rest. They spared the town and withdrew. Rheinfelden was saved.

Goats at the city wall.

There is a goat enclosure outside the town wall near the stork nest tower. This is where the goats of Rheinfeld have their home. A visit to our town's cute mascot is therefore a must.

The crowning glory is a dip in the cool water. Whether at the lido, on the Inseli or in the city park, cooling off is guaranteed.
