- Autumn
When the leaves begin to change color and the days slowly grow cooler, it’s a particularly beautiful time to explore Rheinfelden and the Fricktal on foot. It doesn’t always have to be a long hike: even a stroll through the old town, a walk in the woods, or a mindful walk in nature brings some movement into your daily routine and invites you to experience Rheinfelden from a different perspective.
The editorial team has compiled six tips for hiking and walking in Rheinfelden. These six ideas range from the Fricktal High Trail and Music Trail to special spots in the countryside and right into the heart of Rheinfelden’s old town. Sometimes active, sometimes leisurely, sometimes mindful—but always on foot.
1. Schiffacker Rheinfelden: Exercise and Walks in Nature
Sometimes it doesn’t take much to clear your head: a short jog, a leisurely stroll, or simply some time in the fresh air. The Schiffacker area offers a wide range of options for this.
The near-natural mixed deciduous forest just outside Rheinfelden is a popular local recreation area and an open-air fitness center. With its pleasantly soft surface, the Finnenbahn trail offers ideal conditions for a run. The 1.6-kilometer-long Zurich Vita Parcours adds variety with various exercise stations designed to build strength, flexibility, and endurance.
But it doesn’t always have to be about exercise: Especially in the fall, the forest, with its colorful foliage, invites you to take a leisurely stroll. In this way, Schiffacker effortlessly combines exercise and nature—free of charge and in every season.
2. A Walk Through Rheinfelden: My Little Lunch Break
You don’t need a set route for a little lunch break. Depending on your mood and how much time you have, there are many different ways to explore Rheinfelden on foot. For example, one route might take you toward Stadtpark West, where a quick detour to see the goats is a nice option. On other days, the Inseli beckons with a view of the Rhine—or you can simply wander through the picturesque alleys of Rheinfelden’s old town without any specific destination in mind.
It’s precisely this variety that makes a stroll through Rheinfelden a hassle-free part of everyday life. You don’t need a planned route or much time: even just a few steps in the fresh air add some movement to your lunch break and provide a welcome break from the workday.
3. A Walk Through the Rheinfeld Forest Cemetery
Not far from the Old Town, the Rheinfelder Waldfriedhof is a special place for a peaceful fall stroll. The cemetery, which is over 100 years old, impresses with its mature trees and park-like layout.
You can explore the grounds on foot along winding paths. Historic tombs, ornate fountains, and monuments offer a glimpse into Rheinfelden’s history. The restored cemetery chapel also features four murals by Rheinfelden artist Jakob Strasser.
Those who’d like to round off their walk with a culinary treat can reach the public restaurant Salis at Reha Rheinfelden—complete with a sun terrace—in just a few minutes via the Spitalsteig. Note: The path includes stairs and is therefore not suitable for people with limited mobility.
4. Fricktaler Höhenweg: Hiking from Rheinfelden to the Fricktal
Where better to start a hike than among historic alleyways and the Rhine? The approximately 60-kilometer-long Fricktaler Höhenweg begins in Rheinfelden and winds through the varied landscape of the Fricktal region in several stages all the way to Mettau.
The first stage begins in Rheinfelden’s old town and leads up through the wooded Steppberg to the Sonnenberg Tower. Once at the top, a sweeping view of the region opens up. The trail then continues through forests and meadows to Zeiningen.
Those who wish to hike longer in the Fricktal should follow the Höhenweg across the Tafeljura plateaus via Wegenstetten and Frick to the hamlet of Sennhütten and finally to Mettau. Each stage has its own unique character. Especially in the fall, the colorful forests and vineyards provide a picturesque backdrop.
The Fricktal High Trail is therefore ideal for anyone who wants to discover the Fricktal step by step.
5. Rheinfelden Music Trail: Hiking with Musical Accompaniment
Why not combine hiking and music for a change? The 25-kilometer-long Music Trail between Kaiseraugst and Wegenstetten makes exactly that possible. The route, marked with pink signposts, also passes through Rheinfelden and combines outdoor exercise with musical discoveries.
Along the trail, information panels introduce 56 instruments taught at the Unteres Fricktal Music School. QR codes allow you to listen to the instruments directly on your smartphone. The interactive stations are particularly entertaining: at the Rhine Bridge in Rheinfelden, for example, you can conduct an orchestra, while elsewhere sound installations and other musical activities await.
In addition to the auditory experiences, the trail winds through the rolling hills of the Fricktal region and, in some sections, along the banks of the Rhine. This makes the Music Trail a varied outing for the whole family, where music, exercise, and nature come together.
6. Eden Mindfulness Garden: Mindfully, Step by Step
A walk doesn’t always have to be about covering as many kilometers as possible. In the Mindfulness Garden at the Hotel Eden im Park, the focus is instead on mindful awareness.
A barefoot trail with a variety of surfaces invites you to consciously feel the ground beneath your feet. There’s also a Kneipp pool, medicinal herbs and flowering plants, as well as quiet spots to linger. Here, you have the opportunity to consciously slow down and experience your surroundings with all your senses.
Those who’d like to take a little more time afterward can combine their visit with a relaxing swim in the Eden saltwater bath or a stop at the restaurant.
Whether it’s a long hike, a short lunchtime stroll, or just a few mindful steps: Rheinfelden and the Fricktal can be explored on foot in many different ways. It’s precisely this diversity that makes getting out and about so varied.
